This file is intedted to accompany 1052B when sent as part of the sneak preview
This series will be a continuing information source in the DBRIDGE echo
Updated copies of this file may be obtained from 1:3601/14 / 1:1/168 using the
MagicFileName of DBPREV or the filename DB1051AG.Zip @9600HST+ only!
This is a series of messages to provide information
to the user of the "sneak preview" edition of DB
Beta 1052B - there are NO docs available beyond
the beta.docs in the file and these messages.
Docs. will become available with the release of
the General Release - Please remember that you
are running a sneak preview of a release still in
beta test - nothing is guaranteed except that the file
will take up disk space! Please read the new-order
docs/form found in the sneak preview files.

By now you all have seen Chris' initial post regarding a sneak preview of DB
being available "somewhere" in the world... !
I am going to post a series of helpful hints that will help those "foolhardy"
folks who obtained this "semi-official" sneak preview.
First: where to get it!
The availability of the sneak preview is not guaranteed at any
site(s) other than 1:108/68, 1:1/168 AKA 1:3601/14, and the official Europe
and Austraila/Asia Sites (2:280/280 & 201:300/301 respectivly). It well may
be available at all sales/support sites and from beta test sites.
PLEASE use ONLY the following names to request the sneak preview:
DB-1051B.Zip or the MagicFileName: BETA
Use of other variations may well get a copy of some version, but not one that
can run with your key!
Second: Are there complete docs/ update feature lists/ or instructions
available with the sneak preview?
No, there are no complete (or even partial) docs, etc for this version. It is
not subject to support by any sales/support site. It is only a sneak preview
(a fantastic one, but still not subject to support) It is a what you see, is
what you get version. If you wish to experience the future DB general release
in a pre-release form and are willing to risk problems... then go to it!, but
if you expect a total finished/polished product, you may be beter served by
waiting a bit. THIS IS NOT the GENERAL RELEASE - it's just a "Sneak Preview"
What follows is a CRC report on the actual file - so that if you obtain a

This is two in a series of helpful hints that will help those "foolhardy"

What's this about not needing an external fossil?
DB-1051B does not require nor need (nor use) any external fossil driver. Ray
Gwinn has provided the code for DB's internal driver.
You will still need an external fossil if your BBS needs to use one. There is
a "listed" comment in the BBS configuration screen that would seem to
indicate the ability to transfer the internal fossil function to your BBS;
however the feature (type YES to keep fossil HOT!) is not yet fully
implimented; therefore, please do NOT expect the internal fossil to support
your BBS neeeds at this time - this may or may not be fully implimented in
the general release.
If you do require an external fossil, you might consider loading X00.Sys in
the config.sys with: DEVICE=X00.Sys E - and then either in the autoexec.bat
or the batchfile used to bring DB up, use XU to deactivate the external
fossil. In the section of batch file used to call your BBS place the XU
commands to activate the used port and X00 features... it might resemble the
following:
:9600
XU CAPTURE:ON FIFO:15 LOCK:1:38400:8N1 PORT:1:ON
Echo Connected at Transwarp Speed... >GATE2
Echo Thank's for calling at 9600 baud >GATE2
OPUS DBOPUS -b9600 -r0
XU CAPTURE:OFF FIFO:OFF LOCK:OFF PORT:1:OFF
Goto Start
You will note that XU is used to turn the external fossil OFF after the BBS
is exited... this procedure will minimize any minor problems that might be
seen if the external fossil were to be left active and in conflict with the
internal driver. You can check fossil/port statis by typing XU S.

What's this? I can't get DBEDIT to work from the command line! <grumble>.
You may notice that the overlay files (called *.ovr) are missing and are
replaced ny files named DB0*.131 and there is no more DBEDIT.exe file.
The editor is now a sub-set of DB. To find the available sub commands just
type DB ? from the command line. One option is DB EDIT - so although you will
need to break the habit of typing DBEDIT from the command line you still will
be able to access the editor from the command line with the command DB EDIT.

What's this Address Synonym at the bottom of the nodelist cfg.screen do?
There is a box for data entry that is found at the bottom of the Nodelist
Configuration screen. This box asks for information called "Address Synonyms"
and the status/syntax line says <synonym> <address>. If you put an ASCII
character(s) in the synonym spot and then type in a Zone:Net/Node in the
address spot - as an example : AG 1:3601/14 <enter> will then let you
type AG at any place in DB that needs to be filled in with a name and/or
zone:net/node! So, If you were to type a message to me usingh DB Edit, after
hitting " E " to enter a message, you could type AG and hit <enter>. the
result would be that the to: line AG "data" expands into my full name and
fill network address as you specified in the nodelist cfg. screen.

Why is my DB not unpacking/packing/bundling the mail?
One area of the DB 1.30 to beta 1051B version that may present problems is
the new XMAIL configuration. The primary area of difficulty is the setup of
the compression methods. The following works WELL here. Please note that you
need to use COMPLETE drive:\path\filename.AND extension! Please note the
PKZIP compress switch of -M -EA4 (this will speed up the best compression of
mail). Please note the " + " in front of the ARJ file (ARJ requires approx.
280k to run, the + gives it more memory). Please ESPECIALLY note the
ARCA/ARCE compression line. ARCA with the given switches is fine, but we have
found that if you are using a version of ARCE other than the one we
originally tested, you WILL have problems with packets not being
moved/deleted! The simple solution to this is to use PKXARC (PK36.EXE) with
the switches shown. the pipe " | " command for ARCA places the command AFTER
the filename and is required for this function to work. A pipe is NOT needed
for use with PKXARC. Please check the switches carefully. This version of DB
uses the "MOVE" command od the compression utilities. This saves time/space
and grief <grin>.
With the release of the General Release, there will be available a package of
"approved" compression programs that were tested and worked with that
release. The compression package will be made available to all sales/support
sites (listed in DBNET) and all authorized distribution locations.
ZIP compress command C:\PKZIP.EXE -M -EA4
ZIP decompress command C:\PKUNZIP.EXE -O
LHA compress command C:\LHA.EXE M -M
LHA decompress command C:\LHA.EXE E -CM
ARJ compress command +C:\ARJ.EXE M
ARJ decompress command +C:\ARJ.EXE X /U
PAK compress command C:\PAK.EXE M
PAK decompress command C:\PAK.EXE E /WA
ARC compress command C:\ARCA.COM | /D
ARC decompress command C:\PKXARC.EXE /R
ZOO compress command C:\ZOO.EXE -M
ZOO decompress command C:\ZOO.EXE -E
If you experience any problems with XMAIL settings, please let us know. Oh,
one mor comment. The default compression method may now be user set. To
change from the ARC setting, just follow the directions next to the default
box. (hit space to change/enter to save) REMEMBER that if you have set
specific compression on 1.30, you may need to change the contents of the
"box" which opens following the compression setting. As an example, I use zip
as the default method. I used to say "Zip for all except 1:133/303 etc." now
that is NOT the way. Now, since I use ZIP as default, I only need say:
ARC 1:133/303 etc.
The packet size may now be set; however the bundle size set is not yet
functional.

INTERCOM ? What's this about an INTERCOM ?
When connected to another D'Bridge beta (from a DB beta) you will notice a
capital " I " on the top line of the screen header... it is for INTERCOM! If
you press the " I " you will see a dual-screen-chat open in the lower half
of the screen. This enables a "chat" mode between the connected DB's and
further, it also writes the chat (answered or unanswered) to a log file in
the DB directory. The log is called INTERCOM.LOG. When the intercom is
invoked, a bell is rung at the other end. If neither side types anything,
there is an automatic "time-out" feature which will close communication
within 60 seconds. There are additional features that can be called from
within the intercom - they will be fully described in the docs. at this time
none of those features are "supported" and it will be necessary to wait for
documentation time to provide dependable information on activation of
additional features (if any). There is one point that MUST be clearly
understood!!! The comment on the top of the screen regarding "CTL-A to end
communication/terminate connection" is just that and NOT a way to turn off
the INTERCOM. Once enabled, the INTERCOM will remain on until the end of the
transmission, There is no reason to turn it off! After all, what would you do
different with it off, than with the intercom still enabled? There are NO DB
functions that are available/not available to the user which are dependant
upon the presence/absence of the intercom being left on - so if you turn it
on - be assured that if you hit CTL-A, it will not be just the INTERCOM being
shut off... it will be the termination of the total connection!

Read the D'Bridge Log from DB Idle mode? Search The Log in "Color"??
D'Bridge now lets you observe and search the log from the Idle screen.
Invoking the log feature is easy. Just hit Alt-L and the log window will
open. You may "quick" check the log by hitting M)orning, A)fternoon, or
E)vening. You may search for a specific word or number by invoking the search
function and you can set the color of the key work searched for... and then
that key word/number will not only show up in the Alt-L log, but also in the
DB Log window - and in "color."

Just hit Alt-E as a call comes in? What to do, What to do!!
A new feature in D'Bridge provides for the situation where you have "just"
activated a keyboard command as a call comes in... There is now no conflict,
just a new series of options that are displayed on the top of the screen
immediatly following Data/1 Answering: A)nswer I)gnore O)ffHook - the choice
of Answer, will delay the keyboard action untill after the call has been
answered and completed. If you wish to ignore the situation and "get the
keyboard action over with" hit I, and if you just want to go OffHook and
start over, hit "O".
This is a very usefull feature as it gives you that "last second" chance to
change your mind and allow the call to complete and do the keyboard action
after the call completes.

Ok, just what happened to the Banner and the Human TimeOut in the BBS config?
When you upgrade from D'Bridge 1.30 to the "sneak preview" beta 1051B, you
will notice two changes in the BBS configuration... First, the BANNER is
gone!! well, not really gone, just available in a different form. To
re-create your "banner" and loading BBS comments - create an ASCII text file
and then provide the Drive:\path\filename.txt on the line called:
Loading "BBS" (C:\DB\Oloading.txt)
Now to the "Human Caller TimeOut" - In DB 1.30 you were able to cut this time
down to about 5 seconds... in the beta and the general release, this function
will not allow a setting less than 20 seconds (I use 25 seconds!).
Why, you ask - I will tell you, I say, "Two of the MAJOR problems that
effected DB and other mailers, was the problem of some mailers to drop
through to the BBS because they required a longer sync time than the "5 sec."
specified in 1.30 gave them. We have found that between 20 - 25 seconds is
sufficient for even the slooowest other mailer to complete the handshake -
so, in order to avoid problems, Chris made the default (and the lowest
setting) 20 seconds." The BANNER file is an old and well known problem - ask
a user in Canada who was as exaspirated as any person I have ever heard with
DB problems - he shortened the banner and, shazam! no more problems. The
problem was again a handshake/sync problem where a banner of longer than
about 22 characters caused problems. By putting this same facility in a text
file, Chris has added functionality to this troubled feature. You may have a
number of text lines in this file and the display of this file does NOT hurt
the handshake/sync.

What are those three new subdirectories for and why did DB create them?
D'Bridge beta DB-1051B creates three new subdirectories that will better
support a number of DB's current and future features/developments.
The DATA directory is created off of the DB directory. This directory stores
3 sets of files: the costing (costbase) data files (2), the nodelist
(nodebase) data files (2), and the taskq data files (2).
The MAIL directory is created off of the DB directory. This directory is
where the inbound mail bundles/packets is placed and unpacked.
The ISOLATE directory is a directory off of the inbound files directory and
is there for future use.

What unique information can be obtained in the DB Editor?
There are a few new features available for your use in the DB editor; they
include... ALT-D from any echomail area. Alt-D will display the echomail's
routing path by City, State (Country). It makes interpating the path line
easier by providing names instead of numbers. This feature still has a few
known glitches, where out of zone seenby's are mixed with in-zone seenby's,
there may be cases where some of the citied may be mis-reported. You may wish
this is an example of a hidden message that is written "in-between"
to view the "hidden" kludges and the path line, well just hit Ctl-K and the
lines - as long as you start each line with a Ctl-A and end each line
everything hidden behind a Ctl-A will be visible. You say you want to write a
with a hard carrage return (do not let the lines wrap!), you will have
hidden message in mail?? Well, from within a message you are writing, just
hidden messages to amaze you friends and to confound the others! <grin>!
hit Ctl-A (the happy smiling IBM face) and type the line you wish to hide.
When you hit a hard carrage return, you will have saved the line as "hidden."
To see an example of hidden messages within a message, Hit Ctl-K now... <g>!
There are many other features in the editor and many of them will be even
better with the release of the general release.

Placing SET DISKSTATS=Y in your autoexec.bat or the batchfile you use to

DB is processing (unpack/toss/pack/bundle) the mail.
The status line consists of 4 sections:
XMAIL | Total K in bundles packed | # and K of packets being created | Usable
space in your Queue directory
The figures will change as DB processes mail - this status line will let you
better understand the disk space requirements that your particular system
uses and requires.

first box. Go over to the "MCF NAME" box and hit the F10 Key, select your
modem type (Please note the file name that "pops" into this box.) If you wish
to vary any of the modem setups or the init string, just go into the DB
directory and find the filename that you just "noted" from the MCF NAME box
and edit that file with a text editor. (the file will end with the .ext of
".MCF") - to re-init the modem after changing a "MCF" file (and perhaps
updating the MCFILES.ZIP file with the file you just edited) just use the
F10 key again...
There is now the ability to "disable" "DimeSaver" and "Collision Control"
Available in this SINGLE LINE version is the ability to out-dial by FLAG
Dial/Specific Dial by specific modem on specific port... as follows:
You must place your primary modem/port in the DATA/1 line. You may place your
secondary modem/port in DATA/2 (note: this does NOT mean that comm1 goes in
DATA/1, just that whatever comm port is primary goes in DATA/1) - then to
activate the ability to OUT-DIAL on your single PRIMARY line, choose either
the flag dial or specific dial with the following syntax:
Specific Dial - 1:3601/14 2:ATDTetc.
Flag Dial - HST 2:ATDTetc.
Please note: the above feature is designed for a single phone line connected
to two modems (not one line per modem) If you do other than this, please
realize that the alternate port is not "disabled" so an in-coming call will
cause problems - the full explanation of this feature will be in the released
docs.
Because there have been some reports of systems "hanging" for "hours" or
less... Chris has built in a new user selection for connection by time and by
dollar cost. CostGuard is activated by typing in the maximum number of
minutes you will allow in a connection and then the maximum cost allowed -
Please take note that this feature WORKS!! So set it with care! This is NOT a
feature just for a time cutoff for no-carrier, etc., it IS an active timer of
communications. If you set it for five minutes - you will lose connection at
the end of the fifth minute - if you set it to $10.00 - it will drop carrier
at ten dollars. Use with care and thought.

Have you guys fixed that LASTCALL yet ?
LASTCALL now places all L-*.* files in a Zip file and extracts only the
single file "called" by LASTCALL - LASTCALL may also be totally disabled with
the use of the environment variable SET LASTCALL=NO.
A note about the M-*.* files in your "queue" - they do not "auto-destruct"
yet, so you may want to delete them. The M-*.* files serve no purpose for
users, at this time.

Is there anything I can do about AREAFIX autocreated areas and security 9999?
Yes! The new security level which will be added to an auto-created area is no
longer 9999 - it is now set for 5000. This will allow you to provide for
availability of new areas for specified individuals.

Too many rings - too many rings, whaat to do ?
There is a setting in the comm/modem setup for controling the max number of
rings allowed per call. If this number of rings is reached without an answer,
your log will note - "Too many rings" and if this happens twice in a row, the
call will be automatically held for 10 minutes.

Is there some way I can free up some extra memory?
Yes, the memory used by placing all the session passwords and all the areafix
information in memory may be free'd up by doing the following:
With the release of this gamma you may now send those two "memory hogs" to a
text file. You do NOT have to do this, but if you wish to, it is now
avaialble to you. From inside the Security Screen, with your cursor on the
first line of the session password "box" hit Ctl-N (this will insert a single
free line under your cursor) then type @SESSION.TXT and do NOT hit enter, but
rather hit Ctl-W and the session passwords will be sent to the file
SESSION.TXT in your DB directory. The same may be done in the Packet Mail
Control window - with your cursor on the first line of the AreaFix
information line, hit Ctl-N to create a free line under your cursor, then
type @AREAFIX.TXT and again hit Ctl-W to write the information to a text file
called AREAFIX.TXT which will be in your DB directory. Please note that in
the AreaFix case, only those lines that do NOT specify a specific AREAS.BBS
(like FidoNet.NA) will be placed in the file - the lines with a specified
areas.bbs will be left in the "box."

What about the *.MCF files and THIS install (1.31g)?
If you have already "dealt" with the *.MCF file for your modem and find that
it works well, you will want to take care that DB installs YOUR *.MCF file.
The filenames for all *.MCF's have changed, so your previous *.MCF file
should still remain in the DB directory along with the NEW *.MCF file. You
may want to place both files in a "clean" directory and ren *.mcf *.txt and
then copy xxxxxxxx.txt+yyyyyyyy.txt xxxxxxxx.MCF - then edit the newly
created and named *.MCF file to take advantage of all your previous work...
or just rename your old *.MCF file to the NEW *.mcf name from the F10 list.
Then go back into DB and to the comm/modem setup. Re-install by selecting the
F10 menu option, being very carefull to select the exact file you just
re-named. (you may want to pkzip -u MCFILES *.MCF - to update the zipfile;
while this is not required, it does save mistakes later on.
If you are totally new to this part of the comm/modem setup, please do the
following: go to the DB terminal (or your term program) and start the
CAPTURE.LOG (in dbterm it is Alt-L) type the code that will cause your modem
to send its' configuration to the screen (in USRobotics products the code is
ATI4 and ATI5) close your log to save the settings. THen when you install the
modem from the comm/modem setup screen, if the modem is not functioning as
before, you will have a "saved" file to consult. You may edit the *.MCF file
with any editor capable of saving plane ASCII text. Please pay particular
attention to the length of the PREINIT and INIT strings. Each line will begin
with AT and each line should NOT exceed 40 characters, inclusive of the AT.
What follows is a section of my *.MCF file:
